Treatment of hypothyroidism, or under active thyroid function, is prescribed hormone therapy of T3 and T4. T4 is the most used, as it is able to create T3 in the bloodstream as well, and give the patient the full hormone therapy benefits.

Monitoring for  HypothyroidismDoctor-Thyroid-Treatment

Therapy for hypothyroidism is monitored by doctors who offer hypothyroidism treatment at six week intervals until the blood tests show the patient’s hormone level is stable. During these visits, a blood sample is checked for TSH to see if the right amount of thyroid replacement hormone is being given. The goal is to maintain TSH levels within normal limits. Depending on which thyroid testing lab used, values may vary, but doctors who offer hypothyroidism treatment diagnose a normal TSH range as between 0.5 to 5.0uIU/ml. Once stable, the TSH need be checked only yearly.

Warning of Over Treatment

Over-treating hypothyroidism with too much thyroid medication is potentially harmful and can cause heart beat irregularity and lack of blood pressure control. Expert doctors who offer hypothyroidism treatment are very knowledgeable that drugs treating hypothyroidism can also contribute to osteoporosis. Every effort should be made to keep your TSH within the normal range and to find other therapy treatment if you have a history of heart disease or blood pressure issues.

Thyroidologists Specializing in Hypothyroidism

Due to the medical warnings given above, it is imperative that you select a thyroid specialist who has extensive expertise in treating hypothyroidism. This must be a specialist with expertise beyond that of an endocrinologist, who might not treat the thyroid as a specialty. The American Thyroid Association can refer you to a thyroid specialist in your locale who can diagnose, treat, and monitor your thyroid issues plus any resulting medical problems.

It is more important to acquire professionally affiliated definite expert referral for thyroid doctor consultations with a thyroid specialist in your area by an expert source such as The American Thyroid Association, than to research sources for discounts in the cost of the examination and tests. However, if price comparing has to be one of your budget considerations, understand that if you have Medicare or private insurance coverage, thyroid examinations and testing are usually covered, at least for 80%, with you paying the remainder 20% of costs.

Discount or Sliding Scale LaboratoriesNYC-Thyroid

There are centers for thyroid treatment across the United States which offer unique discounts on their laboratory services. Other medical centers also offer sliding scale costs for the examination and treatment by their thyroidologists. It is resourceful for the patient to investigate these opportunities for reduced costs prior to making appointments to be evaluated.

American Thyroid Association May Provide Names

If the foregoing listing of affordable medical services for thyroid issues does not connect you with a viable sliding scale or reduced professional cost medical center for treatment of thyroid dysfunction and disease, patients can contact the American Thyroid Association for a listing of affordable care medical centers. The primary focus of the Association is to provide patients with names of specialists in their locale; however, it is possible that they can assist in locating sliding scale facilities. Skype medical examinations and treatment initially served backward countries when patients were in an inaccessible area of jungle or mountain. Then it reached into the Western world’s medical care for persons stranded in snow slides or flooded areas. With technology creeping into more areas of the world, the numbers of people making Skype appointments in their country and internationally will only increase.

On the Rise

No agency tracks or requires doctors to report webcam use, a fact which was reported by Gary Capistrant, senior director of public policy at the American Telemedicine Association (ATA). During an interview with MyHealthNewsDaily, Capistrant emphasized, “it is absolutely increasing and now with those 4G phones where you video-conference from your cell phone, it is going to be much more common.”

The question is not whether to video-chat with patients, but rather how to strike a balance. Not all doctors are comfortable with relying on telecam appointments until they have seen the patient personally several times. Doctors also warn against becoming lazy by relying too much on telecommunication with their patients, especially those with life threatening conditions that may have as yet been undiagnosed.

For Skype appointments with a thyroid doctor through a computer, a doctor must be licensed in the state where he or she is located, as well as in the state where the patient is located.  This is not too inhibiting, since many doctors are licensed in more than one state already.  Patient privacy as monitored by the HIPAA must also be factored into any practice decision. Video Skype services may change the way doctors bill to accommodate Skype.

International Benefits of Skype Medical Service

The world became much smaller when technology dictated that it must. Now that doctors work with each other across the globe even in surgery, it is no stretch to realize internet access can bring patients into the doctor’s office on another continent, and therefore avail patients of the top care in any field of expertise wherever the patient and specialist are located

Skype Appointments With Thyroid Doctor

Since there are no directories at present to access Skype appointments with thyroid doctors, patients should contact the primary organization for the disease.  That person would contact the Endocrine Society or the international American Thyroid Association with members from 43 countries. By contacting the organization’s registry of available specialists and with highest accreditation certification, it is a very small feat to determine, armed with that physician’s stats, if the physician’s office is Skype-friendly. One can imagine a future with a patient’s information card stating that their Primary Thyroidologist is located in Lavigne, France, with professional consultation via Skype with another specialist in New York, and the medical listing reflecting both specialists as the surgeon in charge.

You may have never needed a United States thyroid doctor before. Think of your thyroid gland as the fuel pump for your automobile. If the pump is not performing to capacity, your car’s engine will be fuel-deprived and will run slowly. Should that fuel pump supply too much fuel, your car’s engine will run too fast and burn out. In the same manner, an underactive thyroid gland causes a medical condition known as hypothyroidism, resulting in many unpleasant symptoms affecting the patient’s physical wellbeing.   NYC-Doctor-Thyroid

The primary symptoms are:

  • Weight gain and inability to lose weight
  • Chronically cold especially hands and feet.
  • Retention of fluids, swelling
  • Dry hair and/or loss of hair
  • Dry skin, fingernails too brittle and break easily
  • Constipation of bowel
  • Irregular menstrual periods, including heavy menstrual flow, reproductive infertility and the cause of miscarriages
  • Incapacitating joint and muscle pains
  • Painful joint Carpal and Metatarsal Tunnel syndrome
  • Hands or feet tingle or are numb
  • You experience ringing or ticking sound
  • You are diagnosed with Fibromyalgia or Chronic Fatigue

  • Extreme and chronic fatigue
  • Depression
  • Decreased sexual libido
  • You feel mentally foggy
  • You are diagnosed with Adult Attention Deficit Disorder, decreased concentration
  • You experience poor short term memory
  • You are a woman who has experienced Postpartum Depression

Why Diagnosis Requires Specialization

There are two basic problems causing failure to diagnose subclinical hypothyroidism:

  • The normal range for a blood test to diagnose hypothyroidism is too narrow and restrictive to correctly diagnose symptomatically hypothyroid patients;
  • In addition to TSH levels, other thyroid hormones, T4 and T3, as well as thyroid tissue antibodies, must be evaluated regarding symptoms of hypothyroidism.

Consulting the Top United States Specialist Nearest To You

If you have suffered any or most of the above-referenced symptoms, you should consult a United States thyroid doctor, namely a thyroidologist or endocrinologist. The common problem in pursuing this appointment and treatment by a specialist is of the medical science making. You might find yourself as a patient running through a labyrinth of medical offices and various labs, and even begin defending your symptoms to the healthcare professionals. You should bypass your general practitioner and all of his requirements for references, and get an expert referral from the informative Thyroid Foundation of America. This foundation can give you a referral to the best United States thyroid doctor for you.

Skype Can Facilitate Your Initial Conference

In selecting one of the top thyroid specialists in the United States, it is possible the doctor selected is not geographically close to your home. You may find the use of Skype to initiate the first consultation with a specialist is very cost effective and time efficient for both you and your new thyroid specialist. This type of service is going to benefit patients and medical practices in a very good way, especially in developed countries with a higher percentage of individual Internet familiarity and expertise.

The staff of Dr. Hugh D. Melnick is experienced in consultations via Skype, and welcomes the contact from new prospective patients requiring Dr. Melnick’s expertise treating all levels of thyroid disease and infertility problems associated with thyroid disease.

He has published many articles in medical literature and taught medical students and also postgraduate physicians. He is a successful author of books on medical issues for the lay person and makes frequent appearances on Sirius Doctor Radio, in which he answers patient’s questions from across our entire country.

Unique Thyroid Treatment Approach

Dr. Melnick’s vast specialization experience led him to develop a unique approach to diagnosis and treatment of hypothyroidism. He has recognized and addresses how hypothyroidism can badly affect every part of your body.

February 1, 2015 Thyroid0

The thyroid is a gland in your neck that secrets hormones that influence your whole body metabolism. If this is not in proper balance, hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism can result. In the case of hyperthyroidism, the thyroid is too active, and it releases too much of a hormone called thyroxine, which essentially puts your body into overdrive. Having an over-accelerated metabolism can cause drastic weight loss, cardiac problems, and leave a person feeling irritable and nervous. Over-active thyroid can be treated with medication or even surgery to decrease the size of the gland.   Doctor-Thyroid-Treatment

The converse condition is called hypothyroidism, which is when there is not enough hormone to drive the body metabolism. This leads to different symptoms consistent with feeling run down, such as:

  • fatigue
  • weakness
  • depression
  • dry skin
  • feeling cold
  • constipation

and cognitive problems such as:

  • memory failure
  • inability to focus

Irregular menstrual cycles and difficulty conceiving can result in women, and sex drive can be affected. A difficulty with diagnosing hypothyroidism is that these changes can occur slowly, and can also be mistaken for the normal aging process.

This is why a specialist, such as internationally renowned thyroid specialist Hugh D. Melnick, MD, is best at determining if this elusive condition is present. A further complication is that subclinical hypothyroidism may be present. Being subclinical does not mean that a condition is non-existent, or that it doesn’t cause symptoms. It simply means that a current particular standard for clinical diagnosis is not met. Clinically established hypothyroidism is defined by hormone levels in the blood being outside of a certain range. However, it is possible to have levels within that range but still suffer from an unbalanced metabolism, leading to low levels of energy, which is called sub-clinical hypothyroidism. A simple blood test may therefore miss the problems you are having due to hypothyroidism, which is why it is best to have an internationally renowned thyroid specialist personally evaluate your case. An initial interview with Dr. Melnick can be arranged via Skype.

Advanced testing beyond the blood tests used to determine clinical hypothyroidism are available, including nerve conduction velocity tests, which are useful as nerve conduction is slower than normal in the case of an underactive thyroid. Basal body temperature is another useful signature of an underactive thyroid. The advantage of these tests is that they directly measure the whole body consequences of this condition, that also leads to the feeling of being run down that may have prompted your suspicions that something was wrong in the first place.

The good news is that medications are available to correct this condition and have you feeling like yourself again. They will need to be taken continuously or the condition of hypothyroidism and its symptoms will reappear. Essentially these medications make up for the deficiency in hormones produced by your thyroid, and they allow your metabolism to function at normal levels. If you feel like something is wrong that is unexplained, but that you feel could be explained by an underactive thyroid, contact internationally renowned thyroid specialist Dr. Melnick for an evaluation, even if you were previously told that a blood test has ruled out thyroid problems. Sub-clinical hypothyroidism is estimated to have a high prevalence in the population, though many do not realize they suffer from this affliction, and may regard their low-energy state as an unavoidable fact of life. It need not be if an underactive thyroid is the underlying cause.

January 23, 2015 Thyroid0

To ask how you can locate the best internationally renowned thyroid specialist for your unique needs is similar to asking Michael Phelps how a person reaches his number of gold Olympic medals, and then ask the same question of Olympic skier, Nooni.   NYC-Doctor-Treatment

There can be no correct answer for either or both of these champions, for the question delves into familiarity and personality issues along with strength, endurance, individual preferences, likes, and dislikes during training and competing.

Personal Touches

You must list the agenda important for the specialist who will be treating you. Their expertise and credentials of course must be of the highest caliber, and their staff must be friendly and must put you at ease in the face of an uncomfortable thyroid disease and personal hormone replacement therapy.

Credits too Long to Describe

But beyond those statistics which could fill their voir dire competently, there is the sticky personal issue inside you that wants to have a doctor you like, trust, admire and can bond with.  You will need to tell them details of your life as personal as those gathered by a marriage counselor so they can monitor your thyroid issues.  Nonetheless, they will remain your professional expert physician and know the exact cure for what ails you each and every visit to their office.  They will do all that without criticism, cajoling, or an unsympathetic demeanor.  He or she is also now your friend.

The above qualities and personality traits cannot be indexed in a brochure detailing the specialist’s strong suits and short ones.  It is doubtful if even the physician could describe his or her “bedside manner” and patient rapport to its full importance for their patients.

The Intangibles of a Bond

The attribute of bedside manner or patient rapport is something that cannot be taught and therefore cannot be bought.  Just as one particular house became the one you call home and the one special clothing ensemble makes you feel well and new again, the right internationally renowned thyroid specialist with the exact personality and character traits that you need will be the one for you.

The fact that he or she is also an internationally renowned thyroid specialist is just icing on your thyroid cake. Having rapport between you will make your recovery all the easier and give it the blessing of speed that another specialist who lacked the charisma owned by your own internationally renowned thyroid specialist could possibly exhibit.

True, you must check all credentials, awards, and honors. You should locate at least one patient and get that person’s opinion.  You should learn from your initial appointment, whether through Skype or in person. Only you can say if he or she is the right specialist for you.
